Lisa Steel

Advance Practitioner for Children with a Social Worker

Prior to my time at Hillingdon Virtual School I have over ten years' experience in education in both mainstream and alternative provisions. I have worked in a variety of roles from a SEN department in mainstream secondary school to leading a support team in a PRU. I have specialised in ASD support, reintegration to mainstream education and Emotional Literacy interventions. I have several years' experience in private tutoring as well as providing respite care for young people with complex learning needs. What I enjoy most about working with vulnerable children and young people is how much they inspire me with their resilience to overcome so many barriers. This drove me to work in Virtual School where I feel privileged to support young people that have had such a difficult start in life, and the teams around them, to ensure they have the best chance to achieve their full potential despite their obstacles.

I have worked at Hillingdon Virtual School since 2018. I am Lead Practitioner for SEND and Post-LAC; supporting my own caseload of Looked After Children aged 4-18 as well as overseeing the attainment of the whole SEN cohort. This includes multi-professional work with the SEN team in Hillingdon and other Local Authorities for our Looked After cohort that have EHC Plans to ensure timely handovers, school consultations and adequate transition support.

In my current role I am passionate about advocating for keeping children and young people at the centre of planning with their long-term future always in mind. I believe that having the best education is essential for this to happen. Looked after children often face many more changes and transitions than their non-looked-after peers and so the consistency of support and understanding in school /college is essential for their ability to form relationships with people and in so doing, grow their confidence and make progress towards brighter futures.
