New Service to Help Education & Safeguarding Professionals Respond to Harmful Sexual Behaviour

In response to the 2021 Ofsted review The Harmful Sexual Behaviour Support Service | SWGfL, run by SWGfL in partnership with the Marie Collins Foundation, is now available to help education and safeguarding professionals across England. It provides the tools to equip and empower practitioners to address the alarming normalisation of harmful sexual behaviour in children and young people.

The telephone and email support, which is funded by the Home Office and developed in collaboration with the Department for Education, is available Monday - Friday, 8am to 8pm. Call: 0344 255 0623  Email: hsbs@swgfl.org.uk

How will it support you?

It will provide education and safeguarding professionals with:

  • Advice on individual cases or incidents of harmful sexual behaviour, to ensure an appropriate response both for children displaying this behaviour and others affected by it
  • Guidance on policy development on tackling harmful sexual behaviour
  • Relevant resources, best practice and contacts around harmful sexual behaviour, both locally and nationally

What is Harmful Sexual Behaviour?

Developmentally inappropriate sexual behaviour which is displayed by children and young people (under the age of 18) and which may be harmful or abusive. It can be displayed towards younger children, peers, older children or adults. It can be harmful to the children and young people who display it, as well as those it is directed towards.

Research Opportunity

We're inviting state funded primary schools in Hillingdon to take part in a study testing a new maths and science programme called 'Stop and Think'. The study is being funded by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).

What is 'Stop and Think'?

Stop and Think is a software programme developed by neuroscientists at Birkbeck University which uses quizzes and games to help pupils learn counterintuitive concepts in science and maths. In a previous study, pupils who used the programme had higher attainment in science (+2 months progress) and in maths (+ 1 months progress).

Please see this information sheet for more information.

Next steps

Schools can sign up by emailing stopandthink@bi.team or booking in a call. To choose a time for this call, click here. Web: https://www.bi.team

Safety Alert - Fines Due to Chocking Death Whilst in Care

Please find attached the latest Green safety alert which is applicable to all nurseries and schools. The alert follows two recent court cases where standards of care were below required standards. This led to two people in the care of others choking to death and settings being fined.

The alert draws attention to key issues such as risk assessments and effective supervision required in settings for nurseries and schools to review.
