Safeguarding Escalation: Resolving Professional Differences
In October 2021 Hillingdon Safeguarding Partnership agreed a multiagency escalation process to facilitate the resolution of professional differences in adult and child safeguarding. This process has been widely shared across the safeguarding network, it is purposefully simple to promote usability by the diverse range of agencies within our Partnership.
Safeguarding is complex work, and there will be times where professional differences arise within, and between agencies. It is in the best interests of children and families that these differences should be resolved as quickly as possible and by those in the best position to do so. This promotes effective safeguarding and enables the development of collaborative and productive relationships across the network through ensuring value and respect for professional expertise between disciplines and agencies.
There are four stages of escalation:
- Involved practitioners in consultation with supervisors
- Line Manager to Line Manager
- Strategic Safeguarding Leads (for schools - child protection lead for education, for social care - Heads of Service)
- Safeguarding Partnership
Full detail of the process is provided in the documents below.

SORTED Substance Use and Misuse Team Resources
The SORTED team has been alerted to an increased number of young people presenting to A&E department in Hillingdon hospital after consumption of alcohol, cannabis products (cannabis edibles and THC vapes) and nitro oxide. The team devised resources for parents to be able to recognise signs of their children being under the influence of those substances. The information resources cover a number of areas in relation to young people substance misuse and can support parents with having the conversation with their child around the risks of substance misuse. If the professional or a parent/carer is concerned about a young person using substances, they can contact the team via email sorted@hillingdon.gov.uk or make referral using Stronger Families portal.

Hillingdon Youth Council - Secondary School Pupil Membership
Hillingdon Youth Council (as part of the Universal Youth Service) is seeking to recruit new members to represent Hillingdon young residents by linking in with School Councils and student forums across the borough. Ideally, we would like to have 2 representatives from each senior school who can attend the full HYC meetings at the Civic Centre on the 1st Monday each month; they will also be able to attend/host surgeries, focus groups, project groups & council meetings as well as getting involved in charitable activities across the borough.
Please contact Maggie Ditchburn at MDitchburn@hillingdon.gov.uk for further information & membership applications.
