Food Waste Action Week (18th - 24th March)

We invite schools to join us in supporting Love Food Hate Waste's Food Waste Action Week campaign. This year's theme is "Choose What You'll Use" highlighting the benefits of buying loose fruit and vegetables instead of packaged. Research from Love Food Hate Waste has shown that we could reduce food waste by 60,000 tonnes just by buying loose fruit and veg. Free school resources, suitable for 7-11-year-olds, can be downloaded here: https://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/schools

Find out more about the campaign: https://wrap.org.uk/taking-action/citizen-behaviour-change/love-food-hate-waste/food-waste-action-week

Hillingdon Council is currently collecting food waste from 28 schools across the borough, which is then being recycled and turned into energy and fertilizer. You can watch a short video here showing what happens to the food waste.

If your school is interested to introduce this service, please email us at recycling@hillingdon.gov.uk

World Oral Health Day 2024

Wednesday 20th March 2024 is 'World Oral Health Day' which aims to remind us to take care of our mouths with an effective toothbrushing routine and regular visits to the dentist.  This year's theme is 'A Happy Mouth is ... A Happy Body'.

Some interesting facts:

  • Hillingdon has 28.2% of 5-Year-old children with decayed, missing or filled teeth, which is above the England average.
  • Hillingdon has 16.7% of year 6 children with decayed, missing or filled teeth, which is above the England average.
  • More 5-9-year-old children are hospitalized due to tooth decay than for any other reason.

To help you celebrate and highlight the day, please see resources available on 'World Oral health Day' website to support your setting:  Resources to spread the word | World Oral Health Day

Many thanks for your support with improving oral health in Hillingdon.
